The proposed Woodlawn Alternative Waste Technology (AWT) facilities are located within Collex's Woodlawn Eco-Precinct, near the town of Tarago, in the Local Government Areas of Goulburn-Mulwaree and Palerang. The Eco-Precinct includes 6,000 hectares of land made up of the Woodlawn and Pylara properties. The Eco-Precinct includes the Woodlawn mine site, the Woodlawn Bioreactor landfill which operates in the Woodlawn mine void and the site of the proposed Woodlawn Wind Farm. It is proposed to locate the AWT facilities adjacent to the existing evaporation dams which formed a part of the Woodlawn mine water management system, to the west of the Bioreactor.

Features of the proposed site include the presence of low permeability clays on-site, and the existing evaporation dam walls which can be used to make sure surface and groundwater contamination does not occur as a result of the proposal. The site has also been heavily modified as a part of grazing and mining activities and does not provide habitat for threatened or endangered species or ecological communities.

The land area comprising Collex's Woodlawn Eco-Precinct will provide a large buffer zone between operations at the proposed AWT facilities and the closest residents. Amenity issues such as noise, air quality and traffic are being addressed as a part of the Environmental Assessment for the proposed AWT facilities.
