The proposed Woodlawn Alternative Waste Technology (AWT) facility is located at the top of the Lake George catchment area, along the Great Dividing Range, and covers an area of approximately 20 hectares.
The AWT proposal includes a range of water management techniques to make sure that the downstream environment is protected.
Management techniques proposed for the AWT facility include:
- Management of the entire AWT facility site as a "nil discharge" site to make sure that water which has been in contact with waste or composting organic matter is controlled on-site for small through to large rainfall events;
- Use of concrete pads and clay liners to prevent groundwater contamination;
- Use of bunding and clean water diversion drains to prevent clean runoff from entering the site;
- Use of appropriate sediment and erosion control measures during the construction of the facility; and
- Ongoing monitoring of surface water and groundwater to ensure that contamination is not occurring.
The process of open windrow composting at the facility will involve watering of the compost on an ongoing basis. It is proposed that water for this operation will be supplied through:
- Capture of clean surface water runoff in a proposed stormwater dam;
- Use of water from Woodlawn's Raw Water Dam; and
- Recirculation of excess water from the open windrow area.
Water management for the proposed AWT facility will be addressed in detail in the Environmental Assessment.
