Planning For The Future Of The Shoalhaven City Coastline

Coastline Issues
Some of the types of issues that will be considered in the Shoalhaven City Coastline Management Plan are noted below. More detail on these and other issues, as relevant to each of the sectors of Shoalhaven City's coastline, will be developed as the project progresses.

  1. Climate change, including changes to storm frequency and intensity, extended drought periods,
    more hot days, and sea level rise is likely to impact on coastal ecology, beach and dune stability, wetland health and lake entrance processes;
  2. Hazards associated with rock fall around cliffs and rock platforms affect the safety of walkers and anglers;
  3. The safety of beach users, swimmers and recreational boating when coastal lake entrances are open (eg Lake Conjola, Burrill Lake etc);
  4. Removal of rock platform and beach shell fish by excessive harvesting;
  5. Inundation of urban areas by waves overtopping coastal dunes (this happens from time to time near Mollymook and Burrill Lake);
  6. The affects of coastal development on beach amenity, including overshadowing of foreshore reserves and the beach itself, changes to coastal views - from bushland to houses; and changes to public access;
  7. Population growth in and around coastal villages contributes to cumulative impacts on coastal ecology, creates competition for access to recreational facilities (for instance, crowding on boat ramps in peak holiday periods), increases the safety risks for beach users and can change the style and friendliness of the village atmosphere;
  8. Poorly sited development degrades significant habitat for rare or threatened species or endangered ecological communities.
  9. Invasive pest species such as bitou bush affect the ecology and scenic value of coastal dunes and headlands;
  10. Conflicts between coastal users seeking peaceful and active recreational experiences; and
  11. Conflicts between residents, Council and other authorities because of different expectations and insufficient understanding of issues and processes.
