A further Accreditation for the Umwelt Water Team
Umwelt has a new Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) – Chris Bonomini. This takes our total to two CPESCs – Chris and Mel Swan. With only 14 CPESCs in the Hunter Valley and 50 in NSW, Chris’ certification further boosts the Umwelt water team capability, with CPESC certification (an international qualification), steadily becoming mandatory on many projects for a range of clients.
Any project which disturbs the ground from a small single residential block to a large mine site may require installation of erosion and sediment controls, of which CPESCs are uniquely qualified to undertake.
Umwelts Water team have extensive experience in developing and reviewing erosion and sediment control plans and assisting site teams with ongoing monitoring and maintenance of controls including site rehabilitation.

- Muswellbrook Rail Bridge Replacement Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP)
- Erraring Ash Dam – Dry Stack area ESCP (this as also included ongoing inspections of controls and revegetation progress)

Chris Bonomini – Senior Engineer (Water, Process and Risk)
Chris is a Water and Process Engineer and now a Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control who has worked in the industry for 24 years, gaining a wide range of hands on experience and practical knowledge. For the last 13 years Chris has worked as a consulting engineer and has extensive experience with surface water management, water balance modelling, water quality, process engineering, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, and resource efficiency. He also a has strong practical experience in plant installation and commissioning. These skills enable Chris to offer a comprehensive range of practical water, process and risk engineering services to a diverse client base.
Chris has participated in various mine and industrial water management projects which have included the preparation of water resources impact assessments, water and contaminant balance modelling, water quality investigations, preparation and update of water management plans, water treatment system designs, surface water management system designs and the design of process and fire water reticulation systems. In addition, Chris is also experienced in the operation and maintenance of a range of water treatment systems including stormwater first flush systems, activated sludge wastewater treatment, dissolved air flotation and ion exchange.

Melissa Swan – Senior Environmental Engineer (Water)
Mel is an Environmental Engineer and Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC No. 8954) with over eight years’ experience across the infrastructure and resource sectors. She has experience in the identification and management of the impacts of construction, power, infrastructure, mining and extractive industry developments on surface water resources, that span concept design of mitigation measures to environmental management throughout construction and operational phases. Mel has undertaken extensive site-based work throughout her career and has experience in providing advice and technical assistance to civil construction site teams on surface water matters including erosion and sediment control, environmental planning and compliance and flooding and drainage issues.
Mel is part of the Water Engineering team at Umwelt with responsibility for projects primarily within the infrastructure (roads & highways, rail, wind farms and solar farms) and extractive industries (mines and quarries). Projects include erosion and sediment control plans, flooding and drainage investigations, water quality management, environmental management plan preparation and surface water management system design.
