Closure and Decommissioning
Umwelt has award-winning experience in closure, decommissioning and rehabilitation planning.
Our team has been actively involved in all aspects of closure planning and hands-on closure management for multiple clients in the coal, mineral sand, talc, salt, gold, metalliferous and iron ore mining industries.
We assist clients with the development of conceptual plans, pre-feasibility plans, progressive rehabilitation, and detailed closure plans. This facilitates a smooth transition from existing operations to other sustainable future uses of each site.
Extensive Experience to Ensure Success.
We have extensive experience in closure and rehabilitation activities having been involved in the successful completion of numerous projects. As a result, Umwelt has worked with clients in the preparation of corporate standards for closure planning and rehabilitation monitoring, both of which are being applied nationally and internationally.
Our experience includes a range of regulatory and environmental contexts across Australia and recently includes work for NSW Trade and Investment in assessing the adequacy of rehabilitation programs at legacy mine sites.
We have been involved in the detailed implementation of closure and rehabilitation activities on a number of sites. Such sites include Xstrata Coal Australia’s New Wallsend No.2 Colliery, which was awarded the inaugural NSW Minerals Council Environmental Excellence Award, and Donaldson Coal’s Tasman Mine site. Umwelt’s design, implementation and coordination of follow-up care and maintenance activities has led to sign-off from the relevant government agencies on the successful completion of rehabilitation activities at a number of different mines.
Our specialist skills in this area include:
- Preparation of detailed mine closure plans;
- Development of objectives and criteria;
- Future land use planning assessments;
- Final landform design and water management design;
- Post-closure groundwater management strategies;
- Rehabilitation standards, advice and assessment including monitoring;
- Operational support and management supervision during closure activities.
When a community is affected by a closure project, we help our clients prepare stakeholder engagement strategies, facilitate meetings and organise informational displays. All approval requirements and policy documents are covered as well as post-closure rehabilitation care and maintenance programs.
You can be assured that our knowledge and experience will facilitate a seamless transition throughout the closure and decommissioning phases of your project.
