Principal Archaeologist & Excavation Director Tim Adams presents the discovery of a nineteenth century stone dish drain crossing an early alignment of Scott Street, uncovered approximately 1.5 metres beneath current Scott Street during the light rail construction. The drain was constructed with basalt stone, which was used extensively around Sydney in the 1870s but isn’t known to have been commonly used around Newcastle at the time. The drain has been archaeologically recorded and several sections will be left in situ beneath the light rail.
