Last week, VicGrid, the Victorian Government body established to coordinate the planning and development of new energy infrastructure, released the draft 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan for public consultation.
Key Highlights
- Seven Draft Renewable Energy Zones (REZs): South West, Central Highlands, Grampians Wimmera, Wimmera Southern Mallee, North West, Central North, and Gippsland. These zones are identified as optimal for new wind, solar, and battery projects – covering less than 7% of Victoria’s land, with only ~1% needed for actual development. See the interactive map here.
- Gippsland Shoreline REZ: A proposed coastal zone from Woodside Beach to Seaspray, to support offshore wind projects by identifying suitable locations for onshore grid connections and offshore cable landings.
- Transmission Projects (2025–2040): A coordinated rollout of infrastructure to connect REZs and offshore wind to the grid, with seven transmission programs identified.
Umwelt’s Victorian Team is currently supporting our clients on more than 10 projects at feasibility, planning and delivery stages, in or near to 5 of the 7 REZs.
With Victoria surpassing its 2020 renewable energy target and on track for 40% renewables by 2025, now is the time to act. A robust transmission plan is the necessary framework to provide confidence to communities, developers, regulators and all stakeholders.
