Social Inclusion has gained greater attention in Victoria following the Royal Commission into the State’s Mental Health system. As a result, a number of Social Inclusion Action Groups (SIAG) have been formed to support local communities in promoting greater social inclusion and connection.
This project, commissioned by the Frankston City Council, aligns with the broader objectives set by the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health system. The commission highlighted the importance of local communities in supporting wellbeing, connection, and mental health, leading to the formation of Social Inclusion Action Groups (SIAGs) across Victoria.
OUR INVOLVEMENT:
Umwelt’s Social Team provided key insights into social inclusion in Frankston by analysing local needs, gaps, strengths, and opportunities. This involved reviewing Council policies and strategies, conducting a literature review to identify groups at risk of social exclusion, and defining what makes a community socially inclusive.
The team interviewed various stakeholders, including community service providers, to capture lived experiences. Findings from both primary and secondary data informed a workshop with Council and key stakeholders, where results were shared and recommendations refined.
The analysis guided the SIAG’s efforts to enhance social inclusion, offering tailored recommendations and core principles to encourage greater participation and wellbeing across Frankston City Council.
OUTCOME:
Work completed by Umwelt culminated in a Social Inclusion Needs Analysis Report delivered to the SIAG. This informed the development of the SIAG’s framework, a foundational resource guiding their work to improve social inclusion, connection and wellbeing across the City of Frankston.
